Spring Shreds at Whistler–Don’t Forget to Zinc It
Whistler, BC (May 23, 2009) Even if your home hill has long since closed and beach days are far more prevalent than pow days, there’s still plenty of snow in the mountains and a few resorts are still turning lifts. With Whistler reporting a 60-inch snowpack, 3 open chairs, and an operational terrain park, I made the drive north to get some spring turns in at the end of May. The bike park was up and running and patios were packed with beer-guzzling city-ites out for a day in the sun, but the hill served up a solid afternoon of entertainment with hit runs, rock bonks, and even a couple slushy turns in the steeps off the Peak Chair. The park only had one jump, but a wide variety of jibs from corrugated pipe to picnic tables and down rails kept the kids entertained. And with temperatures rising into the 60s and blue skies in the alpine, it was obvious that the shred season–at least in Whistler–doesn’t end in April, or May for that matter–the lifts will be running into June.
