The Skeena Mountains are located twenty hours North of the U.S border. The closest major town is Smithers, BC, a well known fly-fishing destination but not much else. The roads are packed with game, mountain sheep, moose and wolves to name a few. Four hours north of Smithers is a small crossroad town called New Hazelton. One hour northeast of Hazelton sits the Bear Claw lodge, where two helicopters and a handful of guides post up for the winter months.

Charlie Hoch and myself were offerded a couple seats for a week in mid-January at Skeena Heliskiing. Trew Gear was to thank, and i’m pretty damn thankful. We flew seven of seven days for seven hours a day, 777 a lucky day in Vegas or heli time in the Skeena. We won that one with the mountains. The conditions varied, crust in the alpine, powder on some pillows. There was surface hoar and knee deep turns, varied to say the least.

The heli kept landing so we kept on jumpin in, a great cycle if you asked me. I’m lucky Charlie is a good iphone photographer or there wouldn’t be any proof we went on this trip at all. Cheers from the Skeena crew.
