Freq Senior Editor John Laing fwd’d this Youtube promo last week of a Samsung promo clip for Jay Z’s new forthcoming album: “Magna Carta Holy Grail.” And who is in the mix along with Shawn Carter, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell and Rick Rubin? None other than original OG frequency Freq and producer of “The Walrus Dreams,” Ari Marcopoulos.
The Greek/Dutch/New Yawker is killing it with his Jay Z shots popping up on billboards throughout the city, plus his photo pack continues to sell and he spends his days flying from NYC to Milan to Rio and back selling prints and books for real dollars.
Of course, the snowboard marketing types from back in the day who couldn’t understand how this motor-mouthed, profane, freak of nature could ever amount to anything, were likely unaware of his previous tenure as a screenprinter in Warhol’s second Factory as well as his early photo work documenting the pioneering 1980s hip hop and art scenes Manhattan.
In fact they are likely the same folk on the InnerWeb who keep asking, “Why is that hobo dude in the recording studio?” Apparently unaware of that Rick Rubin remains the most significant music producer in post-Beatles history, but I digress…)
Big ups to RastAri Marcopoulos and his genius visions. We love you, man.
