Alternative snowboard events are on the upswing–inclusivity trumps the unnatainable cheese wedge three pack when it comes to bringing the community out to ride. And nowhere is this more on display than at the Gerry Lopez Big Wave Challenge at Mt Bachelor, OR, which went down this past Saturday, April 25. Groms, pro riders, and a soul-surfing contingent from Japan (see Issue 12.1 for more on this crew led by Gentemstick guru Taro Tamai) were all on hand to slash a few waves and send a few skyward in the ever-unique course that emphasizes flow into features named after iconic surf breaks like Pipeline and Jefferey’s Bay. With each “wave” judged on a ten point scale for flow and style from entry to exit, creativity and flow were highly rewarded. Winter even made a bit of an appearance, delivering some spring powder to riders and revelers alike.

Contributor and Central Oregon Avalanche Association VP Jon Tapper was on hand to document the gathering and provide a nice gallery of imagery displaying the style session on display in the volcanic mountainscape of central Oregon. Mahalo to Gerry Lopez, the Mt Bachelor crew and all who lent a hand in bringing everyone together to celebrate spring in the Pacific Northwest in style.
