Pulling off New York’s Interstate 40 near Salem, the snow banks were at least a foot taller than the ankle deep sheet that covered Albany just an hour’s drive south. The flat, rustic countryside didn’t strike me as an ideal spot for snowboarding. Although, from what I’d seen of the Ice Coast Kills Shit crew (featured in issue 13.1 of frequency: TSJ), I had faith I was about to witness something worthwhile. Sure enough, when I found the crew in a sculpture park called Salem Art Works, they were getting ready to jib a watermelon–themed trailer. In regards to getting weird with it, you can count on ICKS.
“HOW YA DOINNNNN’?!” they shouted. Another thing you can count on during an encounter with this Empire State-based crew is hearing this rhetorical question asked multiple times, often in rapid fire succession. ICKS rider Joe “Joey B” Bauer popularized the simple three-word phrase, spoken in an exaggerated Long Island accent, as a way to mock the pushy kooks, or “Joey’s,” who come upstate from the Big Apple to ski. The phrase has become the crew’s recognized slogan, and in turn, the name of their newest movie.
“How Ya Doin’ The Movie” is a unique statement on New York snowboarding. While the boarding is on par with many other street-based crews, what makes “How Ya Doin’” stand out is the cast’s knack for incorporating hilarious antics and comedic skits into a campy, yet cohesive, project.
With the hundreds of videos that come out every season, a crew needs to find a niche in order to stand out among the rest. Despite their home state’s usual lackluster conditions, ICKS has found theirs by making the most of what’s at hand around New York and its diminutive mountains. While there’s a large place in snowboarding for hard way 360s onto rails and triple cork variations, this amicable group of avid, unsponsored riders produced a movie that is relatable and inspiring to snowboarders of all skill levels. They have no travel budget, or even time to travel for that matter, as filming usually comes after work. Between the jokes, the slams and occasional makes, the film depicts an honest representation of a riotous season with the homies, something we can all relate to.
And if you don’t like it, well, fuggetaboutit.
