Watch Carlos Blanchard’s “Dolore”
Dolore is a short film that challenges conventional perceptions of limitation. Spanish photographer Carlos Blanchard created the project in the Dolomites of northern Italy, following two Dutch para-snowboarders, Chris Vos and Lisa Bunschoten, as they venture into the mountains via splitboard for the first time.
After working with Chris and Lisa on the 2021 photo-book Dreams, Blanchard had long hoped to take them into the backcountry. Three years later, splitboarding brought them back together in January 2024.
“Our idea was simple: document two people going out and trying something new,” he explained. “Whatever your situation, if you work hard enough, results will come—and you’ll be able to do the unthinkable.”
Despite the adaptive measures, Blanchard focused on minimizing the emphasis on prosthetics. “Even though our protagonists use prosthetics, this story applies to everyone. You come as you are, and have the opportunity to make the best out of it.”
Now he hopes Dolore can help bridge the gap between para- and abled- sport communities through snowboarding—a liberating activity that comes in all forms and can be enjoyed by everyone.
