Here and There

Krista HoldenKrista Holden grew up in Hudson, WI, but now calls Duluth, MN, home. She’s worked in the snow sports industry since she was 14, currently in sales and marketing at her local shop, Ski Hut. While snowboarding is Krista’s passion, she also enjoys applying her photography skills to mountain biking and competing with a sailboat racing crew on Lake Superior during the off-season. Krista loves capturing unique events and the culture surrounding snowboarding. Some of her favorite photography projects include Take the Rake, The Uninvited and Heavy Metal. Krista loves getting more women involved in snowboarding and looks forward to coaching and photographing at Beyond the Boundaries again this season.

Matt RoEbkeAs a kid in Bellingham, WA, Matt Roebke took hundreds of photos on his mom’s old 35mm Canon AE-1. He pointed the lens at ferns, bugs—anything that lay before him. Before long, his mom said, “Let’s put some film in that thing.” Growing up in Washington has shaped Matt’s photography. He loves when it’s dark and miserable out, seeing details and colors that make the places he explores truly unique. Matt’s mental health has also played a huge role in the way he photographs, and the best piece of advice he can possibly give to anyone with their dream is: “Don’t quit.” Working with both skiers and snowboarders for companies like CAPiTA, K2, Subaru, Mt. Baker Ski Area and others, and finding his way into events like X Games and It’s Tits have only further fueled Matt’s flame. Side hustles like car repair and painting help keep his dream alive, but his one constant is photography in the mountains with the people he loves.

John ScarthBorn and raised outside of Toronto, ON, it wasn’t long before the West Coast came calling for John Scarth. Snowboarding was everything to him and in 1997 he headed to Whistler, BC, to pursue a photography career. For the next decade, he had “countless good times and amazing adventures” as a freelance photographer, capped off by a few years as photo editor at Snowboard Canada. In 2009, he moved to Squamish with his family—wife Dawn and children Ashton and Anika—and started the slow transition out of action sports and into commercial production, where he now works as a line producer for film and television.

Kyle Schwartz Kyle Schwartz grew up in Northern California skateboarding, fishing, hunting, riding dirt bikes and snowboarding as much as he could. After high school he moved to South Lake Tahoe for community college and, of course, snowboarding. Kyle dropped out of college and pursued the dream of being a snowboard cinematographer and has filmed and edited for various projects since 2003, such as That, Derelectica, Vacation, This Video Sucks, Pat Moore’s “Blueprint” web series, Pepper and more. Kyle is thankful to all that have given him a chance to prove himself, including but not limited to Chris Wellhausen, Chris Edmands, Sean Johnson, Nathan Yant, Ian Ruhter, Jessie Grandkoski, Nick Hamilton, Pat Bridges and Jeremy Pettit.

Gabe TaylorHailing from Encinitas, CA, Gabe Taylor’s life at the beach changed for the snowier after a stint in Colorado and a first attempt at college. He moved to Mammoth, fell in love with snowboarding and a career as a professional snowboarder followed. Filming with the Grenade Gloves crew, Torey Piro, Autumn Line, Standard Films, and a whole bunch of others gave Gabe a front row seat into the height of Mammoth culture in the 2000s. Gabe now spends most of his time at a desk working for Mammoth Mountain in the marketing department and raising his family (Amanda and Finley pictured) in the town he loves. He’s been known to sneak out onto the mountain “here and there” with rumors now circulating about a video part coming out with Blaise Rosenthal and Chad Otterstrom’s Midlife Crisis production.
