“Switzerland’s Rhône Glacier has always been a place where tourists gather. The parking lot in front of the Belvedere Hotel—which has been closed for years—near the entrance to the glacier caves was quite busy on this morning. We were out with our splitboards, but most people who visit here just get out of the car for a quick snap and then they’re back on the road, speeding across the Alps. To slow down the melting of the ice, the ice grotto was covered with polyester sheets years ago.” Photos: Phil Bucher

“Sometimes ‘backcountry’ means 20 feet from the Alta, UT, parking lot and sometimes ‘backcountry’ means 20 feet from the Brighton parking lot. Katie Kennedy samples both with a crippler and a handlplant, and a guest appearance from Ted Borland’s fisheye lens.” Photos: Tim Zimmerman

“When we got to Haines, AK, everything was sliding, and we didn’t think we’d be able to get on anything steep. Then, a clear day and a cold night locked it up. Three Amigos was the first line we went to. Spencer O’Brien, Hana Beaman and Mary Rand roshamboed to see who would drop first, and Mary won. She went right off the top [pictured] and all three ripped it.” Photo: Tyler Ravelle
