Displays the photo gallery for a selected Gallery Album.Soft blue skies, a shining sun and mild temperatures graced West Dover, VT yesterday, allowing for a pleasant day at Mt. Snow. Carinthia, a peak at Mt. Snow dedicated exclusively to terrain parks, had a warm feel to it, and as usual, the parks were on point. But there was one park in particular that held it’s own uniqueness in regards to all the others.
Teeming with big-banked turns, channel gaps and flowing hips, the Grommet Park at Carinthia had been transformed and looked more like a snake run for skateboarders than a terrain park. Designed to replicate the feel of concrete bowls and hand dug half pipes, Carinthia’s park crew developed this uniquely shaped course for the Red Bull All Snow competition, a friendly jump-centric jam.
The Red Bull All Snow put riders on a course without any jibs, an unlikely twist considering the format of most other east coast competitions. In a jam session format, riders took turns (for the most part) on course, focusing on creativity and versatility in their carving, airs and butters. The banks and berms challenged the snowboarders’ abilities to ride fluidly and adapt. There was strong emphasis on creative thinking, style, hangtime and speed.
Zeb Powell, at only 15-years-old, charged fast and sent his tricks huge, flipping nearly every gap and channel on the course. His ambitious display ended up putting him in top spot for the pro division. Carinthia local Shaun Murphy matched most of Zeb’s tricks and came in a close second, with Jeremy Ellenberg following Shaun up in third. Yawgoons rider Brian Skorupski (featured in issue 12.3) earned himself the wildcard MVP award by fully utilizing, and styling upon, the entirety of the setup.
In being provided with such a fun course, the competitors had a hard time wrapping up the day. The sun kept beaming well after the last lifts closed, and riders kept cruising until park staff had to ask them, repeatedly, to leave—a sign of an event that did it’s job of keeping the local snowboard community stoked.
Thanks to Dave Meeker, Red Bull, Mt. Snow, Carinthia Parks and the park crew. It was refreshing to see a primarily jib-focused mountain hold an alternatively-styled, jump-centric jam.
