20 Years of Dreams with Chris Brunkhart

Chris Brunkhart is a legend in snowboard photography–for 20 years he has been documenting the intricacies of snowboard culture. From Euro-visions with Dave Downing to Chilean wanderings with Craig Kelly, Brunkhart recently dug through his archive of 40,000 images to produce a book: “How Many Dreams in the Dark?” In the end, there were way too many images to fit in the book–in this 18-page essay, we feature outtakes, photographer’s favorites, and previously unpublished images from 20 years of dreaming.

While most photogs would burn several rolls per day, Chris was pecking for images like he was hunting for chanterelles. Only later—and especially as his talent grew—I came to appreciate this distinctly different approach. When the hordes were setting up tripods and slave-flashes in the media pit below a big air landing, Chris was climbing scaffolding above the fray. When others were chasing post-Olympic glory at stadium events, Chris was on the road with Craig Kelly in Chile…
