The Better it Gets: On the Spiral Highway in the Alps

“Why are you passionated?” 

My Swiss friend Johnny Casam was blind drunk after a deep powder day. He was delivering an unfiltered monologue in broken English about why he loves snowboarding with all his heart and soul.  

“You cannot image how it’s important, snowboarding for some people,” he continued. “Snowboardering is pure passion. I love you because you are here for the passion. You are here for the truth, not for the money. Always be the true guys on the mountain—style is everything.”

A 30-year storm had smashed Italy and Switzerland. Back home in Utah, a ground-level faceted layer of snow promised an unstable snowpack for months to come. How could I have declined an invite to join Absinthe Films in Europe?…
