Finding a balance between staying shielded from the elements and avoiding profuse sweating can be a difficult task in the mountains, especially when touring for fresh turns amid a heavy storm. Do I open the vents and let this inch-per-hour snowfall breach my outerwear, or stay zipped and steamily soak my layers from the inside out? Either way, once I’ve stopped moving and the moisture starts to freeze, the going gets cold. The North Face Brigandine Futurelight™ Jacket helps combat this pesky perspiration issue.

I’m not much of a gearhead, but I’m wildly impressed with The North Face’s Futurelight waterproofing technology. Futurelight™ gear boasts a mad-scientist “nano-membrane,” an extremely thin layer of fabric that is porous enough to let air escape and recirculate in a way that so many jackets have failed at in the past. They make it by using 200,000 nano-spinning nozzles shooting out their advanced, custom polyurethane solution. All technical mumbo-jumbo aside (which can be better explained through the video below), the Brigandine Jacket feels lightweight and breathable while maintaining top-level waterproofing, even on the wettest of days.

In addition to its breakthroughs in balancing waterproofing and breathability, The North Face Brigandine Futurelight™ Jacket comes with all the pockets you’ll need for easy access snacks, a cell phone, key FOBs and whatever else you may carry as you ride. The chest pockets are situated so that they can still be easily accessed with a pack on, and all the jacket’s pockets are outfitted with YKK Aquaguard zippers, including the collar pockets designed to hold a radio mic and the wrist pocket that has a goggle wipe attached to the inside (the connected goggle wipe I have found to be one of my favorite little features on this coat).
